Soundex is a mapping format to apply to text values, that reduces a name to a four-character code based on how it sounds.
In the figure a series of names have been separated using their 'Soundex' codes.
Soundex technology was originally developed by US Government agencies to help with the cataloging of census and immigration details.
A site at NARA gives full details.
See Soundex in the Help for more details.
