Soundex is a mapping format to apply to text values, that reduces a name to a four-character code based on how it sounds. ![]() In the figure a series of names have been separated using their 'Soundex' codes. Soundex technology was originally developed by US Government agencies to help with the cataloging of census and immigration details. A site at NARA gives full details.
